Why gutters matter

Gutters are part of the roof system

Gutters don’t get much thought until they overflow. On a Southfield home, that usually happens in two seasons: in the fall, when leaves and seeds from mature trees pack the troughs, and in late winter, when snow melts off the roof faster than a clogged or undersized gutter can carry it. Water that spills over the front edge soaks the fascia, splashes against the brick and pools along the foundation, which is the last place you want it on a house with a basement.

Clogged gutters also feed ice dams. When meltwater can’t drain, it freezes in the gutter and at the eaves, and the ice backs up under the shingles.

We install seamless aluminum gutters formed on site to the length of each run, so there are no seams in the middle to leak. We size the gutters and downspouts to the roof area they drain, pitch them so water actually moves, add downspout extensions to carry it away from the house, and fit guards where the trees overhead call for them. When we replace a roof, we look at the gutters and fascia at the same time so the whole edge of the roof works together.

What we install

Gutter work for Southfield homes

Everything that moves water from the roof edge to a safe spot in the yard.

Seamless gutters

One continuous run between corners, with no seams along the length to leak or pull apart.

Fewer joints, fewer drips

Downspouts & extensions

Enough downspouts for the roof area, placed so water lands well away from the foundation.

Keeps basements drier

Gutter guards

Covers that keep leaves, seeds and shingle grit out so the gutter keeps flowing between cleanings.

Cuts down on clogs

Sizing to the roof

Steep, large or valley-fed roof sections push more water; we size the gutter and outlets to match.

No overflow in downpours

Ice & snow detailing

Solid hangers, the right pitch and ice and water shield at the eaves so winter ice does less harm.

Built for freeze-thaw

Gutter repairs

Leaking corners, loose hangers and clogged or crushed downspouts fixed when the system is still worth keeping.

Repair before replace
Choosing the right setup

Gutters, guards and downspouts, side by side

Not every house needs every option. A ranch with no trees nearby may only need properly sized seamless gutters and a couple of well-placed downspouts. A two-story with oaks and maples over the roof will spend every fall clogging unless it has guards.

During the free inspection we look at the roof pitch and size, where the valleys dump water, the trees overhead and where the yard slopes, then recommend what the house actually needs. You get it in writing with photos of the problem spots, so you can compare it fairly.

If the gutters you have are the right size and still hold their pitch, we’ll say so. Sometimes a few added downspouts, longer extensions or a set of guards solve the problem without new gutters at all. And if the roof itself is near the end of its life, we’ll point that out too, because gutters are best replaced when the new drip edge goes on.

How it works

Three steps to gutters that actually drain

You see what we find before you decide anything.

Free inspection

We check the gutters, downspouts, fascia and roof edge, and watch where the water goes now.

  • Photos of problem spots
  • Roof edge checked too
  • Honest repair vs. replace

Written estimate

You get a written estimate with the gutter size, downspout locations and any guards spelled out.

  • Sized to your roof
  • Options side by side
  • No pressure

Clean install

We hang the new system, test the flow and clean up the yard before we leave.

  • Pitch set to drain
  • Old gutters hauled away
  • Daily cleanup

Fighting ice dams?

Ice along the gutters usually starts on the roof: heat loss, ventilation and missing ice and water shield.

Gutters in Southfield

Leaves, seeds and a long Michigan fall

Southfield’s tree canopy is mature and thick, and the gutters underneath it pay for that shade.

Many Southfield streets have trees that have been growing since the houses were built, and on the streets near the Rouge River the canopy is especially heavy. Maple seeds in spring, leaves from October into December, and needles and twigs all year end up in the gutters. Add Michigan freeze-thaw, and a clogged gutter in November is a block of ice by January. Downspouts matter just as much: on houses with basements, discharging water right at the foundation is asking for trouble.

Sized to the roof

Gutter width and downspout count matched to the roof area each run drains.

Guards for big trees

Guards that keep leaves and seeds out where the canopy hangs over the roof.

Away from the basement

Downspout extensions that carry water away from the foundation, not into it.

Roofing questions

Gutter questions from Southfield homeowners

Sizing, guards and keeping water away from the house.

My Southfield house is under big trees. Are gutter guards worth it?
Under a heavy canopy, guards usually cut down on how often you need to clean, especially for leaves and maple seeds. No guard is maintenance-free, so we explain what each type handles and recommend one based on the trees over your roof.
Water is getting into my basement. Could it be the gutters?
It can be. Overflowing gutters and downspouts that empty right at the foundation put a lot of water against basement walls. We check the gutters, the downspout layout and where the water ends up.
Do I need a permit for new gutters in Southfield?
Gutter work on its own often doesn’t, but requirements vary. Check with the City of Southfield building department for your address.
What are seamless gutters?
Gutters formed on site from a continuous coil of aluminum, cut to the length of each run. With no seams along the run, there are fewer places to leak.
What size gutters do I need?
It depends on the roof area draining into each run and the pitch of the roof. Many homes do well with standard sizes, while larger or steeper roofs may need bigger gutters and downspouts. We measure and recommend.
Can gutters cause ice dams?
Clogged gutters make ice dams worse because meltwater has nowhere to go. The root cause is usually heat in the attic, so we look at both.
