What the storm really did to your roof
Storm damage on a Southfield home isn’t always obvious from the driveway. Hail bruises shingles and knocks granules loose without leaving holes. Wind creases tabs and breaks the seal strip, so a shingle that looks fine today lifts off in the next gust. And on streets lined with tall, mature trees, a falling limb can crack decking or crush a gutter in a spot you can’t see from below.
Before you call your insurer, it helps to know what you are reporting. We get on the roof, photograph each type of damage, check vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts, and look in the attic for daylight or wet decking. You get those photos and a detailed scope of the work the damage calls for.
Your adjuster and your insurance company decide what is covered; we don’t. What we do is make sure the damage is documented clearly so the conversation starts from facts. If the roof needs temporary protection until repairs can be made, we can take care of that too. And if we don’t find storm damage, we tell you that as well.

Storm damage we look for
Some of it is obvious. Most of it is not, until it leaks.
Hail bruising
Soft spots and a fractured mat under the surface, often hard to see without getting on the roof.
Granule loss
Hail knocks granules off and exposes the asphalt to the sun, which speeds up aging.
Wind-lifted shingles
Broken seal strips and creased tabs let the next storm peel shingles off.
Flashing & vents
Dented vents, bent flashing and cracked pipe boots open paths for water.
Gutters & siding
Dented gutters and cracked or loose siding are often part of the same storm.
Interior leaks
Ceiling stains or wet insulation after a storm mean water is already getting in.
Your roofer, your adjuster, your decision
An insurance claim involves several people, and it helps to know who handles what. We inspect the roof and document the damage. Your adjuster inspects on behalf of your insurer and makes the coverage decision. You decide whether to file and who does the work.
Our part is the evidence: clear photos of the damage, a written scope of the repair or replacement, and answers to your questions in plain language.
Read your policy, and call your insurer or agent with questions about deductibles and coverage. If the storm damage turns out to be minor, we will tell you, and a simple roof repair may be all you need.

Homeowners across Metro Detroit on how we document the work.
“Kincaide roofing went above and beyond our expectations. Scott (the owner) took pictures of every step and fix he made. They were punctual, thorough and very professional. No B.S. with Scott, the communication was straight forward and gave us briefings every night before they left.”
“Kincaide did a phenomenal job fixing up my garage roof and siding. They also cleaned up the area after so my dog wouldn’t get hurt. Everytime there was any issue found during installation, they provided picture evidence. They also were the best cost when compared to other companies. Highly recommend.”
“Very awesome, professional experience with Kincaide!!! Scott and his crew is wonderful. They do good work, really put things in terms so that people can understand things better. We will definitely be sticking with KINCAIDE!!!”
Big trees, open roofs and Michigan storms
Southfield’s mature tree canopy is one of its best features, until a summer storm rolls through.
Many Southfield neighborhoods have oaks, maples and other large trees that are as old as the houses beneath them, especially along the Rouge River and on the older streets. When a summer thunderstorm brings hail and straight-line wind, those trees drop limbs onto roofs, gutters and service lines. Winter adds its own damage: gusts working at brittle shingles and heavy wet snow loading the eaves.
After a storm, look for shingles or vent pieces in the yard, dents in gutters and downspouts, broken branches on the roof and new stains on ceilings. Then call for an inspection so you know what you are dealing with.
Hail
Bruised shingles, dented vents and gutters, and loose granules, often worst on one side of the house.
Wind
Creased and lifted tabs, missing ridge caps and torn shingles along long ranch rakes and eaves.
Fallen limbs
Punctured decking, crushed gutters and broken fascia where branches come down on the roof.
